Discovering the etymological origin of the term infamia takes us to Latin. And this word is the result of the sum of three components of that language: the prefix "in-", which is indicative of denial; the noun "fame", which is synonymous with "popularity or fame"; and the suffix "-ia", which is used to express "quality".

Infamy is a evil or vileness that affects the honor or the credit of a person . For example: "I will go to Justice for the mayor to end the infamy and recognize that I am innocent", “Tortures constitute an infamy for any democratic regime”, "Human beings will never recognize that poverty is an infamy that affects the entire species".

In the time of the Ancient Rome , the infamy was the degradation of civil honor . In this case, the censor was in charge of proving the loss of reputation of the citizen when he was considered infamous. The affected, in this way, could not access public offices or vote in elections, which limited their social and legal powers.

He right Roman recognized two types of infamy according to their causes. The Fact infamy It was decreed when the person developed an act contrary to public order, morality or good customs. The iam infamy, on the other hand, it was a consequence of fraud or some malicious action.

No less important is to establish another series of significant data on the aforementioned infamy:
• It was the result of the opinion that, in general, society had of a person, to whom he attributed serious attitudes or actions.
• It should be stressed that any citizen who was accused of infamy and experienced the corresponding sentence quickly saw how all his privileges were restricted, could not hold positions in the government and could not participate in certain popular actions.

In the canonical sense, infamy is the loss of good name as a consequence of the individual's opinion of different prudent people. The Holy See or the purges established by canon law can remove the iam infamy (infamy by law ) while the Fact infamy (infamy indeed ) is acquitted with a change of habit and the manifestation of sincere repentance.

In addition to all of the above, we should highlight that there is a musical group that is called “Infamia”. Española is this melodic heavy metal band that began its journey in 2002 and, so far, has released three recordings: "Dream or reality" (2008), "The Countdown" (2010) and " Neophobia ”(2012).

“Universal history of infamy”Finally, it is a collection of short stories written by the Argentine Jorge Luis Borges and based, mostly, on real events.

The Spanish writer Juan Cueto also has a book that uses the term in our title. We are referring to the work "I was born with infamy", which comes to exercise as a true journey through the social and cultural evolution that Spain has had throughout the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.
